Buffalo ISD

A Great Place To Raise A Kid

Medication at School

Buffalo ISD allows school nurses to train authorized staff to administer medication to students during the school day and school-related events when needed for a student’s health and academic success. Texas law requires specific documentation for any student receiving medication at school.

Medication Requirements

  • A written, dated request from a parent or legal guardian is required and must include the medication name, dosage, and reason for use.

  • All prescription and over-the-counter medications must be in the original, properly labeled container.

  • Only FDA-approved medications will be administered.

  • Medication will be given only as directed on the label unless a physician’s order is provided.

  • Aspirin will not be given to students under 18 unless ordered in writing by a physician due to the risk of Reye’s Syndrome.

Additional Guidelines

  • Medications are kept in the clinic during the school day, except for approved emergency medications.

  • Over-the-counter dosages may not exceed label directions without a physician’s written order.

  • Sample medications require written physician instructions and parent permission.

  • Expired medications will not be administered.

  • A maximum of 90 days of prescription medication and 30 days of nonprescription medication may be kept at school.

  • All medications must be labeled in English.

  • Prescriptions must be written by a licensed Texas healthcare provider. Out-of-state prescriptions may be accepted for up to 45 calendar days.

  • Medications may not be transported on the school bus. Parents must bring medications directly to the clinic.

  • Medication administration records are maintained by the clinic.

Self-Carry Medications

  • Inhalers: Students may carry an inhaler with a physician’s letter and parent permission. A backup inhaler is recommended in the clinic.

  • EpiPens: Students may carry an EpiPen with written physician approval confirming the student can self-administer. A backup is recommended.

  • Diabetes Care: Students must have a physician-approved plan to carry supplies and self-administer insulin.

End of Year

All medications must be picked up by a parent or designated adult at the end of the school year. Medications will not be stored over the summer.
